The thing about Joker with his "Social Experiment" is that he wanted to show that people would kill each other if it meant that they would live. By chosing to go down (or up in this case) together-it proved him wrong. Even if he had blown up both ferries, the people had already showed him that his hypothisis on humans doesn't always apply and there is hope for those who believe in such things.

Ether way-there's nothing to be gained by pressing ether button-if I do, I'll be going against my own morals.

Besides, I don't fear death anyway. There are far worse things than death-the only thing I fear from death is a boring death! You only get one life to live and although it may not be spectacular-your death can be!
